Maximum wage?

Did I hear correctly that President Bush said that some corporate executives are being paid too much money?  Who is going to determine the pay of company officers?  I thought it was up to the company as to how much money various executives made.  What business is it of President Bush's?  Capitalism pays people on the basis of how much they are valued.  The government may have taken the right to insist on a minimum wage, but where does it say in the Constitution that there is a maximum wage?  I thought President Bush was a Republican, but  he is sounding like a moderate Democrat.

Hillary

Hillary Clinton scares me.  The thought of Bill Clinton in the White House again is disgusting.  The last two Democrat presidents, Clinton and Carter,  are an embarrassment to the United States.  Hillary will drag in all of the baggage that we threw out on the street.  Let's not go through that all over again.   Please!

Murderers deserve execution

Do you really care if convicted murderers are executed?  Does it darken your heart when the lights dim as the electric chair is used?  Does the thought of Saddam Hussein dangling from a rope bother you, when you think about all of the people he ordered killed or even killed with his own hand?
It is true that his death will not bring back all of the people he killed.  His death doesn't erase the memories of all the mass graves for his victims.  The execution of Saddam Hussein is simple justice.  Murderers deserve execution.

The Price of Hamburgs is going up.

How many people really care about the minimum wage?  Well, there are some businesses that employ people making minimum wage.  Now these businesses will get tax breaks to offset the cost of the new minimum wage.  Labor unions care about the minimum wage, not because their members work for minimum wage, but because now they can demand more money from employers because the minimum has been raised.  Highschool students care about minimum wage because they are the ones making minimum wage.  They are not raising a family on this minimum wage nor are most of the other who make minimum wage.  The percentage of people making minimum wage is very small, but the impact will be felt by all who like hamburgs and fries.
It is a political move on the part of Democrats and weak willed Republicans, who are afraid of a political backlash.  By the way how many people on minmum wage actually vote?  Oh, yes, their parents vote.  They want Johnny and Jane to make more money so they can go to college.  Just remember this when you bite into your juicy hamburger.  You are helping send our young people to college.

Building a Nation

Hooray for the Super Bowl!  Hooray for the Australian Open!  Hooray for Tiger Woods!  This is the time of year that we need super heros.  It is January, which means cold and blustery weather.  We need something to cheer about.  We need something uplifting to take our mind off of the war in Iraq and the start of the political race to elect a president.  Athletics is about achievement following a lifetime of a commitment to excellence in your chosen sport.  So I salute Peyton Manning and Rex Grossman as they guide their teams in the Super Bowl.  I salute Roger Federer and Serena Williams in their success at the Australian Open.  As for Tiger Woods, I am in awe of his ability to hit a golf ball.  Hip, Hip, Hooray for all of them.
All of this success in athletics has come about because the United States was successful in World War II and in the succeeding cold war.  Our military successes have been followed by unprecedented economic successes.  Look at the history of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett.  Hip, Hip, Hooray for them as well.  They are the super stars of their economic "sport."  They had a commitment to excellence and worked dilligently to achieve their success.  In the process they have opened up new frontiers for many others to succeed as well.
Should I say Hip, Hip Hooray for the politicians traversing the snowing roads in Iowa or New Hampshire?  Have they committed themselves to excellence in their chosen field of endeavor?  What is political excellence?  Is it the building of a better America or is the destruction of those who get in the way?  Hey how will the Colts or Bears win the Super Bowl?  One of them will have to defeat the other in hand to hand combat.  How did Roger and Serena succeed in Australia?  By pounding their opponents into submission.  Ah, but what about Tiger?  He succeeded by being far and away the very best at pounding a golf ball.  The others just couldn't compete.  In sports and in politics there are winners and losers.
Governing begins after the shouting is over.  Building a nation comes after the destruction of political battle.  Athletic success means that there are defeated oppontents left in the wake of the winner.  There can be only one winner, but there is much destruction left behind.  Warfare destroys.  The rebuilding comes in the aftermath of the war.  First, we clear away the rubble and then we rebuild.
American politics seems to be all about destruction.  The campaigns never seem to end.  When is there time to clear away the rubble and begin rebuilding?  Is it all about winning or is it about building a nation?  Somehow we have been able to sustain growth in spite of all of the political destruction.  Just as athletes pick themselves off the ground and prepare for the next season, Americans have done the same thing politically.  In the meantime, we build a nation one step at a time.

Thanks, Massachusetts

Senator Kerry said that the United States is an international pariah.  This reminds me of an song I learned as a child.  "Nobody loves me, everybody hates me.  Guess I'll eat a worm."  Senator Kerry would like us to be more like the Europeans, particularly the French.  He wants us to be willing to negotiate over everything and give up what other people want from us.  Senator Kerry wants us to be weak and dependent upon others.  It is amazing that the 2004 election was as close as it was.  The people of Massachusetts elected him and they can have him.  Unfortunately, it is required to give him a seat in the United States Senate.
Oh, yes!  Who can ignore the other gift from the people of Massachusetts to the United States Senate?  Ted Kennedy.  Not only do we have to suffer the wimperings of Johnny, we have to endure the half demented ramblings of Teddy.  Does this dynamic duo really represent the best that Massachusetts has to offer the government of the United States?
But, wait!  There is another potential gift from Massachusetts making himself known.  Governor Mitt Romney wants to be President of the United States.  Now, lets see...what is Massachusetts' record in sending quality people to the government of the United States?  Oh, yes, I almost forgot Barney Frank.  Gosh, how fortunate can we get to be in the good graces of the people of Massachusetts?
Could it be that Massachusetts wants to undo the damage it has already done to our federal government?  Could the savior of Massachusetts be the savior of the United States?  Should we base our hopes on what Mitt Romney says or the fact that the people of Massachusetts elected him?  Hmmmm.

Fixing Up America

One of the television programs I like to watch is called Designed To Sell which involves the fixing up homes to intice people to buy the homes.  Other programs I enjoy involve flipping houses in which people buy houses that are run down and fix them up to sell for profit.  Each time I see these programs I am amazed at the price of these houses.  If my house was located in the areas shown in television, it would be worth three to five times what it is worth in the area I am living.  It all involves supply and demand and that is what drives our economy.
If people like granite counter tops in the kitchen, then you give them granite counter tops.  If they want travertine tile on the floor, then you give them that tile floor.  If people want a spacious look to an average size house, then you knock out a few walls to give the appearance of spaciousness.  You give the buyers what they want.  What most people want is a house in which they don't have to do anything except move in.  Most people don't want to move into a fixer-upper.
The emphasis is on having a great appearance to your house when you go to sell it.  Spending money to fix it up will bring more money when the house is sold.  Location is important, but appearance can kill a sale.  Don't give people a reason to not like your house.  These programs have me looking differently at my house.  It isn't that I am going to sell my house anytime soon, but I know the time will come eventually.  When that time comes, what do I want my house to look like?
That question also makes me wonder about the culture we live in.  What kind of a culture are we older folks leaving to you younger ones?  Is it better than we inherited from our parents, or is it worse?  What have we done to make things better for those who will follow?  I would just as soon leave a culture that is not a fixer-upper.  However, how much satisfaction does a person get from moving into a house that is already fixed up?   How much should I do to help those who are coming behind me?
Each generation builds on what was done by the generation before.  So what is important is to have a firm foundation on which to build.  The American society given to me had a firm foundation and my generation has built upon it.  However, I see cracks in the walls and ceilings.  That is an indication that the house is shifting on its foundation.  If this shift continues that cracks will get bigger and the house will weaken.  There are serious flaws in this society, which if not corrected will lead to a run down country.
There is a greater percentage of children being born out of wedlock than I can remember.  More and more children are being raised by single mothers.  What is our government doing to promote this?  Our government has been giving money to single mothers over the past few decades.  The idea was to help the children.  The result has been more single mothers and not fewer.  The attraction has been the money.  The more money that the government gives, the more the people become dependent on that money.  This is one of the cracks that is getting bigger and bigger.
Television is a fairly good barometer of what is happening in our society.  We got our first television set when I was thirteen.  I remember the Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.  We weren't sure exactly what Ozzie did for a living, but he was always there to help Harriet and the two boys, David and Ricky.  Many television critics have had a field day with Ozzie and Harriet, but they were role models for my generation.  What kind of role models do we have today?
I am not saying that everything about our society is falling apart, but there are signs on the walls.  Will future generations have the resources to fix up what we leave behind?  Or, is it better that we fix these walls before we move on?

America and Israel

America's foreign policy focus seems to be Iraq and Iran and the oil supply they represent.  However, the real reason we are engaged in the middle east is Israel.  All of the turmoil over oil, nuclear power, and weapons of mass destruction is designed to keep an American presence in the region to protect Israel.  Even though the American government seems determined to see a separate Palestinian state in order to bring peace to the region, that peace will only be achieved after a concentrated effort to destroy Israel.
The United States was responsible for the establishment of the nation of Israel after World War II.  Over the past fifty-nine years the United States has stood as Israel's lone friend in that hostile environment.  Various American presidents have attempted to broker peace between Israel and her neighbors, but attempts have proven futile.  The only kind of peace the other nations are interested in is one that would shove the Jews into the sea.  The goal of most countries in the world is the elimination of the Jewish state of Israel.
The reason that Israel became a nation is that the United States became a super power and forced other nations to agree to the establishment of Israel.  As long as the United States was THE super power, Israel has been protected.  But the anti-Jewish forces around the world and within the United States have weakened the resolve of the Americans to protect the nation of Israel.  This weakening of the United States will help bring about the final battle described in the Bible.
The greatness of the United States has not been just because of hard work, determination and good luck.  American success as a nation has always been the result of God's plan for America to help establish and defend the nation of Israel.  But the establishment of the nation of Israel has always been designed to bring about that final battle between the forces of God Almighty and the forces of the evil one.  This final battle will be spectacular and devastating.  The fortunate ones will be those who are killed quickly.  The believers in Jesus the Christ will be spared most of the suffering of this epic conflict, because they will be lifted out of this world at the sound of the horn.

Political Hyenas

Wars kill people.  This is as true as true can get.  The greatest war of my lifetime was World War II where over fifty million people died because of the war.  The United States lost over 56,000 soldiers in the Vietnam War.  There have been over 3,000 American lives lost in Iraq since we invaded that country.  The Democrats in the House and Senate are crying out for an end to American deaths in Iraq and now these Democrats have been joined by some Republicans.  Hey, how many Americans died in traffic accidents in the past three years?  How many Americans have been murdered in American cities in the past three years?  Where are the outcries in the Congress about these American deaths?
War is a part of a successful nation's foreign policy.  To deny that power to a country is to neuter that nation.  That is what the Democrats and spineless Republicans are trying to do.  They want to neuter the United States.  The growth of the United States has come through force and not through reason.  We were fortunate that the force was exercised by mostly reasonable men.  The use of national force comes at a price: soldiers die.  These dead soldiers become statistics in the history books, but the story of a nation is written.  The leaders get the headlines and the people eventually benefit from successful wars.  We read about the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Persians, and the Romans.  Each had its day.  This is America's day in the spotlight of history.
There are always hyenas who try to steal the lion's kill, when the lion is looking.  However, these hyenas will scatter when the lion reasserts his dominance.  The lion is well fed and the hyenas have to fight among each other for what is left.  Who is the king of the jungle?  Certainly not the hyena.
Who is the leader of the world?  Who is the richest, most powerful country in the world?  Where is it that people what to go to live the good life?  Which country attracts the best minds on the planet to lead the world in new discoveries?  The answer to these questions is: The United States of America.  The hyenas of the world want to take what we have and the liberal politicians in the congress are doing what they can to weaken the United States.
The most important asset in the middle east is oil.  Our economy depends on oil.  So far, liberal politicians in the congress have kept the United States from developing our oil potential in North America.  So we have imported this oil.  We have protected this source of oil and we will continue to do so.   Now, this foreign oil is threatened by national leaders in Iran and Venezuela.  These leaders are the hyenas of world politics as are those in the U.S. Congress who aid them.  It is time for the lion to reassert his dominance over the hyenas.

State of Disunion

All the chicks were in the henhouse last night as the embattled rooster climbed the fence to crow.  When he opened his beak, we heard a familiar sound.  The old rooster likes to sing oldies but goodies and the crowd in the hen house want to sing the blues.  The old grandfather rooster and the queen hen sat behind the barnyard rooster like they were supposed to, but everyone knew there was no way that either rooster could satisfy the queen and the rest of the hens in the coop.  It doesn't look like there are going to be many eggs for the next two years, and that is no yolk.

Tax incentives for those who have health insurance?  What about those who can barely buy enough food for their families and cannot wait for tax incentives to take effect?  Those of us with health insurance can applaud, but the rest of us worry about the future.  Use less gasoline?  What a brilliant idea.  Alternative energy sources?  Great plan.  Sounds like something a beauty queen contestant would say.  However, the United States Congress will get bogged down in the process because of the lack of ideas and leadership.

President Bush has lost much of his audience and those who are still listening have little power to implement the changes the president wants.  He might as well have been talking to the wind at the stern of the ship of state as he watched the wake of the ship.  The captain should be at the helm, but this captain has lost control of the ship's power and rudder.  The crew isn't interested in what he has to say.  So where are we going?  We are drifting until the next crew and captain are chosen in 2008.

In the meantime, we can hope and pray that we do not run aground and get stuck on a sand bar.  As the speed of our ship of state slows, the damage of a collision with another ship diminishes unless that other ship is traveling very fast.  So, my advice is to enjoy the view, stay away from things that can explode and wear a life jacket.

Bush Legacy

It was a close election in 2000.  It was so close that one or two counties in Florida decided the outcome.  It was the Supreme Court of the United States that finally gave George Bush the nod over Al Gore.  A friend called me about 9:30 that evening to see what I thought was going to happen.  I told him that a prophet had prophesied months before that Bush would win a close election but that we wouldn't know the results until two Florida counties were recounted.  I told my friend to go to bed at his regular time, because he still wouldn't know in the morning.
The first few months of Bush's presidency were rather nondescript as he struggled to set a course.  The events of September 11, 2001 set the course for the Bush presidency.  Suddenly, Bush was thrust into the position of a wartime leader.  The United States had been attacked and it was up to George Bush to lead the country.  Rudy Guliani rallied the people of New York City and would have rallied the nation as well, if he were President of the United States.  However, it was George Bush's job to lead the nation.
Osama bin Laden was declared the chief villain of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.  The United States sent troops into Afghanistan and deposed the Taliban government, who would not give up bin Laden.  The United States has had troops in Afghanistan ever since, but we have not found Osama bin Laden.
Then the Bush administration told us about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.  We were told that Saddam Hussein would not hesitate to use these weapons of mass destruction against other countries in the region and that he would arm terrorists to attack the United States.  So, the drums of war began beating harder and harder.  We had no satisfaction or closure in defeating the Taliban in Afghanistan, so we were going after the dictator of Iraq.  George Bush #1 didn't finish the job in 1991, so George Bush #2 was going to finish the job.
Saddam Hussein is now dead.  He was convicted by an Iraqi court and executed.  But there is no peace in Iraq because of the sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shias and the terrorists who have migrated into the area.  Now, George Bush #2 is facing off against the leader of Iran.  World leaders have taken positions against George Bush.  Bush faces opposition abroad and at home because of his leadership in responding to the attacks of 9/11.  If we had a parliamentary system of government, George Bush would be back on his ranch in Texas and Nancy Pelosi would be prime minister.
Politics used to be based on economics.  "It's the economy, stupid," was the reason for electoral results.  Well, how is the United States doing economically?  The government deficit is down in spite of the military spending in Iraq.  Unemployment is down.  The price of oil and gasoline is down over the pre-election highs of last summer.  The stock market is at its highest level.   Over all, the economy is fairly good, but President Bush's approval numbers are at their lowest levels.  Unless some kind of great tragedy befalls the United States in the next year, which requires Bush to step up into leadership again, he will limp off the political stage to chop wood in Texas.  Not much of a legacy, is it?
One of the tragedies of the Bush presidencies, both I and II, is that Bush number 3 won't have a chance to lead this country.  In a normal presidential election year, a successful, popular two-term Republican governor of Florida would be a front runner to get the Republican nomination for President of the United States in 2008.  However, this governor's last name is Bush.  He is the son of #1 and the brother of #2.  What's in a name?

America Losing a War

Many Americans have lost track of just who and what America is all about.  There is a flow of history that is lost on these Americans.  They are more concerned about the peripheral things of lives such as sports, movies, television, and family.  Just look at what American troops do on their off hours in their Iraqi bases.  They play games, watch television, communicate with their families, and wish they were home.  However, they are not at home.  They are in a combat zone in an unpopular war.  These troops don't have the luxury of forgetting about the war.  They are in the war, but why are they there?
America is at war with fanatical Islam.  Our enemy is a large number of dedicated Muslims who want to cleanse the world of the things that are not Muslim.  This is more that protecting American oil interests, although these oil interests are important.  These fanatical Islamists want to destroy our way of life.  They might consider our way of life to be decadent, and some of it is decadent.  But...it is our way of life.  They want to destroy the richest, most powerful country that the world has ever seen.  When will we realize this fact?
The destruction of the World Trade Center was just the beginning.  We had better get used to the idea of long lines in airports and intense security at large public events.  Our sense of privacy will be tested time and time again, but this must be balanced against our survival.  President Bush may be the most isolated politician in Washington as his political enemies try to weaken him further.  But these attempts to weaken President Bush only serve to weaken the United States.  The world is watching us feed upon ourselves.  This is no way to fight a war.  This is a way to lose a war and encourage our enemies to attack us again.
When the Iranians captured the American embassy in 1979, President Jimmy Carter responded with weakness and not strength.  The hostages were released when President Ronald Reagan took office, because the Iranians knew that Reagan would act in strength.  Our enemies are waiting for another weak American president.  Well, which weak politician will the American people choose to succeed George Bush as President of the United States and help lose the war?

Hillary

Hillary Rodham Clinton has finally made it official.  She is a candidate for President of the United States of America.  It was fourteen years ago that we watched Mrs. Clinton attempt to railroad a new health care package through the Congress.  She was stopped dead in her tracks.  The co-presidency with husband Bill got off to a rough start.  Now, it appears that another co-presidency is in the offing, if the American voters are naive enough to vote them into office.
Hillary has about as many negatives as a presidential candidate can have.  Normally a person with that many negatives wouldn't even be considered as a possible canditate for either the Democrat or Republican party.  It isn't that their past doesn't stick to them and stink.  It seems that the sense of smell of the American voters has been dulled and desensitized.  The Clintons are not coated with teflon but rather with velcro.  They stink but does America really care?

Who Stays and Who Pays

There is no question that the United States was created by immigrants and the children of immigrants.  It is also true that the dirtiest, toughest jobs were done by immigrants, whether digging the subways of New York City or building the transcontinental railroad.  They came, they worked, and most families prospered to varying degrees.  The secret to the success of immigrants was hard work.  Most first generation immigrants had a tough time, but succeeding generations did better.  They all contributed with their muscle power and their brain power.  But there was no such thing as Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid for them.  They paid with their sweat and blood and they stayed in the America they helped to build.
Today, there are still immigrants coming to this country, but there is a big difference.  These immigrants come expecting to earn more money than they have been getting in their home country.  They know their children will be given health care and an education.  Pregnant mothers crawl through holes in fences and wade across rivers to get their babies born in the United States, because then their babies are American citizens and are entitled to stay here.  They haven't contributed anything to the prosperity of the United States, but they are instantly willing to take what ever the government will give.  The grandchildren and great grandchildren of previous immigrants are paying for this latest wave of people through Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
The day will come when these new immigrants, legal or illegal, will pay for their stay.  Legal immigrants are easier to account for than illegal immigrants.  The legal ones don't hide from the law and they pay taxes.  These taxes pay for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.  So, what should we do with illegal immigrants?  Make them legal and let them pay for their stay.  Let them help build the America of the future.
